Educational Post 8: Mathmares

Image
Mathmares! How do you feel when I say mathematics to you? Most of the people are scared of mathematics, some even think mathematics like a nightmare, they see at nights. What is the real cause behind this? Actually, mathematics is not as hard as it sounds, it seems hard because of the prejudice we have. Most of the people's fathers, mothers always say that "Mathematics is hard! I could never do it at high school, I always flunked!" and we keep saying it to our children. They grow up hearing that mathematics is hard. That's why they give up doing mathematics before even trying to understand it. Mathematics is not hard, but people make it sound like hard. You may not like mathematics, that can be accepted. But everyone can learn mathematics if they really want to learn, all we have to do is to leave our prejudice behind. In today's world most of the world population know English, but does that mean we do not need to learn another language? The answer is not really, there are many benefits of learning another language in addition to English. Each new language brings you a new personality, it provides you with a different perspective to see the worlds. It introduces you to a new culture. It is fun to learn a new language, it can provide you with many different job opportunities. It is now easier to learn a new language than before, there are many resources and applications online. Blog 9: Physical Education

Image
Is Physical Education in schools, useless or not? In schools there are many activities that students do for physical education, jumping, climbing, running, playing football, basketball, gymnastics and the list goes on. Some students see physical education as a pointless activity. The students should be active, because a person till they become adults, have the energy to go on whole day, do many activities, but at the same time they need to recharge, use muscles build up strength. It cannot be deniable that students sit on their chairs all day long, they only have 10 minute breaks in between the lessons. And most of the students only go to the toilet because 10 minutes are not long enough to do anything. Now here is the problem, how these students will move and regain their focus? Physical Education lessons come to aid this situation, even though they are not much in lesson time they do have many benefits. According to a research the main benefits of physical education is it develops st...

Educational Post 9: Physical Education waste of time or not?

Image
Did you enjoy physical education lessons in school? Did you always find a way not to join them? I was the latter one. I was a chubby guy and I have never liked doing sports. I have always found a way of not joining them. Until my university life I have never done sports, but after experiencing doing sports, now I totally agree with the fact that Physical Education is necessary for students and I will claim this fact for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it enables students to reduce their weekly stress, it acts like a reliever. It teaches collaboration, most of sports done teaches teamwork to the students. It develops their motor skills, not every person is active during the day, it creates an opportunity for that type of people.

Blog 10: The future of Technology, Education and Gaming

Image
What will be the future of technology? What lies within this electronic world? Back in my day games were use to be played just for fun.  But there are many games that teach something to people now.   As a person who grow up playing minecraft (started playing at version 1.2.5 when ihave just started to high school). I want to talk about Minecraft primarily. It is a game that people from all ages can enjoy, from 3 year olda to 70 years olds. There is a system called 'redstone' it is kind of programing with blocks,  so there are people who create gigantic machines,  systems such as computer, calculator. It supports modding etc. So why not use it for educational purposes since it attracts almost everyone?  Actually there is Minecraft Education edition. It is mostly used for STEM education since it provides the teachers with great opportunity to put theorethical knowledge into practice. Acording to qualitative research made by Sajben (2020) it has be...

Educational Post 7: All Students are Teachers

Image
Student interaction's playing a  big role in learning is an undeniable fact in 21st century. Are you one of the teachers that still follows teacher-based learning styles? If so, don't you think it's time for a change? Because it is known that peer interaction contributes a lot to students' learning process. There are some ways to increase this interaction and decrease your talking time in the class. Firstly, you can let students ask each other questions related to the topic, or the subject you are teaching. Create some opportunities for them to interact with each other. Do pair-work and teamwork activities, let them do projects together. Moreover, student interaction is enjoyable for the students so you will get more of your lesson. Educational Post 6: Gender in Education

Image
People always say that  m en and women "are" equal. Indeed all genders are equal. But do we have the same treatment in education? There are many course books that stereotype and categorize people. Some examples can be given such as "My father goes to work, my mother washes the dishes, and my mother is a housewife" in English books, they are all filled up with sentences like these. "Housewife" is the first occupation that is taught to students most of the time. Together, we can change this. We must stop stereotyping, discriminating in gender, as teachers we have the role to stop it, and we have the control over it. Simply when you see sentences like these in a book, try to change  them when you teach. Course books are just there to lead you, but you can modify them as you wish. If we don't, those stereotypes get wired in students' brains, which disorient their vision of reality about genders. This post was designed for EDT5004 BAU, Spring 202...

Blog 6: Gender Stereotypes in English Education

Image
Women vs Men Girls vs Boys Females vs Males You have probably realized that I have written masculine names with pink and feminine names with blue. If the case were the opposite you would not even realize it. Most of the peoples' brains are wired to stereotyping genders. In schools stereotyping is hidden in lessons. It is possible to see many things such as "Tom likes to play with cars, Margaret likes to play with girls", "Tom's dad fixes the washing machine while Margaret's mother washes the dishes" these two are just examples from gender stereotyping. But it has a big effect on students' lives. For instance, mathematics and physics are seen to have negative relations with female gender, in addition to the science they all are seen as a male work area (Makarova & Herzog, 2015). This affects students when they choose their profession, girls tend  not to prefer being an engineer since it is a male dominated and masculine profession. When the case...

Blog 7: Peer Teaching and Its Importance

Image
Can students be teachers or only teachers can teach efficiently? According to a research when students teach to each other, they learn twice as efficient than they learn alone (Whitman, 1988). Peer teaching and learning is described as a peer teacher teaching to students in a similar age groups with the students who are learning (Fink, 2020). In this context, a student becomes a teacher and teaches to their friends or other students at the same age group. It is also done by enabling students to help and teach other during the lessons. Unlike the common belief, students are also good teachers because there are many benefits of peer teaching. When a peer teacher teaches a subject or a lesson, the other students find them fun and enjoyable (Graziano, 2017) because they share the similar values, ethics, and enjoy similar things because they belong in the same generation. The students' prejudice towards the lesson may change positively, they can get motivated by their peers, it promotes...

Blog 8: Math and Gamification

Image
Mathematics, we  have always had dreams about it. Generally it is found boring by the students, personally it was kind of boring but it was always an interesting subject for me. Frankly, there is a thing called gamification, beware it is not gaming, gamification is applying game concepts to non-game environments with the aim of education. We can apply these principles to mathematics too, and it is also found that gamified education increases students' performance level in mathematics (Jagust et al., 2018). Mathematics teachers should try to gamify their lessons, there are some ways to do it. (Khare, 2018) Rules, goals and objectives should be set when gamifying a subject, mathematical problems can be used to create those objectives; puzzles can be done about equations and other mathematical subjects. Badges can be given for achievements such as solving an equation, explaining a hard mathematical concept to other students, completing the homework successfully etc. You can find a det...

Blog 5: Apps That Every Teacher Should Have

Image
Have you ever experienced a blackout just before you had some assignments to do? Do you need to prepare some materials for your students but you don't have access to your computer? Is your computer too old to handle those things? Do not worry my colleague, I am at your rescue, it is not possible to carry a computer all times, we all know it well. Frankly, there are some ways to create teaching material through our mobile phones.  Another point I want to talk about is using mobile apps during the lessons. Especially it has been found that Kahoot provides students with increased attention span, increased engagement, fun, enjoyment (Licorsish et al., 2018). Also it has been noted that it creates a positive learning environment for students by providing them with quality time, they increase students' willingness to participate in the lesson by gamifying the context (Bicen & Kocakoyun, 2018) . I have some recommendations to share with you if you are interested in learning that k...
