Educational Post 6: Gender in Education
People always say that men and women "are" equal. Indeed all genders are equal. But do we have the same treatment in education? There are many course books that stereotype and categorize people. Some examples can be given such as "My father goes to work, my mother washes the dishes, and my mother is a housewife" in English books, they are all filled up with sentences like these. "Housewife" is the first occupation that is taught to students most of the time. Together, we can change this.
We must stop stereotyping, discriminating in gender, as teachers we have the role to stop it, and we have the control over it. Simply when you see sentences like these in a book, try to change them when you teach. Course books are just there to lead you, but you can modify them as you wish. If we don't, those stereotypes get wired in students' brains, which disorient their vision of reality about genders.
