Educational Post 5: Mistakes Improve Learning

Image
Making mistakes or not making mistakes? Have you ever been afraid of making a mistake and because of this you have not answered questions of your teacher? That happened to me so I will assume that it happened to you too. But as teachers we should be aware of that making mistakes are essential for students to progress. No student was born with a mind good at everything. That's why we should let students make mistakes and we should never discourage them when they make mistakes. Just let them know that it is okay to do errors and mistakes, and mistakes are necessary to learn and gain experience from. So they should see it as an advantage for their learning rather than a halt. This post was designed for EDT5004 BAU, Spring 2021

Educational Post 3: Reading Books or not?

Image
Reading books or not reading books, that is the question. Reading is on option, but nowadays it is neglected. People do not want to read, mainly the fact that our technological devices provide us with many interactive media, so people get bored when they read books and they cannot hold to it. But the thing is, if you do not read even if you do know how to read, you do not have any difference between a person who does not know to read. Reading improves you, your mind and the way of thinking. As teachers we should aim to make students get the habit of reading, it can be books, magazines, articles, comics, actually anything they can learn from. Because most of the habits are formed in school years. This post was designed for EDT5004 BAU, Spring 2021

Blog 4: Career Planning for Students

Image
Do you know how to choose a profession? Do you know that the profession that you will choose will shape your future life? Since we are teachers we should lead students to the right path. I want to share a story of mine. Since childhood I have always wanted to be a teacher. But my teachers always told me "Do not be a teacher, it is a bad profession, be a doctor or engineer, did you lose your mind?". I also tried to change my subject  from mathematics to English, but my teachers ignored me. Anyway, I got accepted in the Teaching Mathematics department at Marmara University and in my second year I started doing double major in Teaching English Language. If I had been guided better, I could have achieved better. So, what I am trying to prove is that if a student is sure about his profession, as teachers we should help them to achieve their goals. If they do not know what profession to choose, we should help them. There are some steps we can provide. First, assess the student...

It is peculiar that I have always been aware of Ma yer's Principles of Multimedia Learning. But the thing is that I didn't know their names. I will briefly describe the principles, but I will not go into detail by giving their names.  1: Do not include distracting materials. 2: Signal the most important part. 3: Do narration and graphics together but do not include text as a third element. 4: Relevant things should be physically grouped. 5: Visuals + Voice-over should be done simultaneously. 6: Divide information into sections. 7: Do a pre-training to recall background knowledge. 8: Visuals and spoken words are better than visuals and text. 9: Pictures are better teachers than texts. 10: Informal addressing helps humans to learn better. 11: Human voice should be preferred over a robotic voice. 12: You do not need to put your head in a video, it does not help with learning. Basically these are the principles to apply when producing a video teaching material, from now on you shou...

Image
I believe that you all heard about Cyber-Bullying. Do you know how hard it is to deal with it? Considering the fact that people who are subjected  to cyber bullying also face being bullied in the real life, which makes things worse. There are a few things we can do to prevent it. 1- Do not respond to them because that’s what they want you to do. 2- Try not to take their comments seriously and do not reread them. 3- If you can, block them from your social media accounts and seek help from an adult. 4-If bullying keeps happening, collect data, messages, images, email, posts etc. first report their messages to the posts. 5- As a last choice report them to authorities. This post was designed for EDT5004 BAU, Spring 2021

What do you think when you see this sentence? Do you even consider it as a sentence? Actually, it is grammatically correct, and even has a real meaning. Languages are not obvious systems; it is not an easy task to comprehend all of their properties. Let me explain the sentence you see on the right. Educational Post 1: A Dilemma

Do you know whom to believe in? How can we be sure if they tell the truth but the whole truth? Imagine that you go to a park and see a child swinging.  When you approach him, he tells you to never trust old men. You find it peculiar and sit on a bench next to an old man. The man tells you children always tell the truth.  Now you remember what the child has told you:  "never trust old men". But this man says to trust in children. If you believe the child's words, you must not trust the old man. But if you do, then you should not trust the child at all. Who is telling the truth?  Basically this is called "Liar Paradox". You can find further information on  here . This post was designed for EDT5004 BAU, Spring 2021
