Blog 4: Career Planning for Students

Do you know how to choose a profession? Do you know that the profession that you will choose will shape your future life? Since we are teachers we should lead students to the right path. I want to share a story of mine. Since childhood I have always wanted to be a teacher. But my teachers always told me "Do not be a teacher, it is a bad profession, be a doctor or engineer, did you lose your mind?". I also tried to change my subject  from mathematics to English, but my teachers ignored me. Anyway, I got accepted in the Teaching Mathematics department at Marmara University and in my second year I started doing double major in Teaching English Language. If I had been guided better, I could have achieved better.

So, what I am trying to prove is that if a student is sure about his profession, as teachers we should help them to achieve their goals. If they do not know what profession to choose, we should help them. There are some steps we can provide. First, assess the student's needs, then make a list of professions, talk with the people in those professions, set some goals and find the right profession for you.
